  1. Sailoz Mukherjee

    Born in 1907, Kolkata, West Bengal, Sailoz Mukerjee studied art in Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta. He learned his technique in Paris also. He was one among the pioneers who explored the possibilities in oil medium. He was a great art educator also and taught art first in Sarada Ukil School of Art and later in Delhi Polytechnic. Sailoz was a sensitive painter with a passion for life. His works display that strength undoubtedly. Brilliantly he combined the visual idioms of Indian folk art and Miniature paintings with that of Matisse and the Wild Beasts. He was one of those early modernists who laid the foundation for modern art in the land. Sailoz Mukhrejea is one of the nine master artists whose works have been declared as the National Treasure. He is also one of the four artists whose works were featured in the postage stamp brought out by Indian Post and Telegraphs Department in 1978.
